Blame the confusion on Christopher Columbus. He thought he sailed around the world to get to India from the east. He thought he landed in India, so he called the natives Indians. He erred, but the name stuck. "Aborigines" is probably the best descriptive term for the people who were here when Columbus got here. Native Americans is not technically correct. There was no "America" when Columbus got here.
Most of the names of Indian tribes have something in common. The name usually means "people." We call the tribe of the big sky country "Dakota." They call themselves "lacota." Which means "people." Some early pioneer did not hear it correctly.

It wasn't dumb to explorers like Columbus who thought they had found a short cut to India and naturally named the natives they saw there as Indians.

Blame Christopher Columbus. He was looking for a shortcut to India for the spice trade, and hit a double continent along the way. He called the inhabitants of the new land 'indians' because that's where he thought he was. And the name stuck.

I always use Native Americans....today, as I also use the identifying term African Americans for the appropriate selection. I use the term Hindu or Muslim for India individuals, if that is what they believe in. I have to share with you what my 10 year old son said after moving to the west coast and finding out he had Russian, Latino, Spanish, and Hindu children in his class. Sukdeep came to class with his "turban" on and my son came home to tell me he had a kid in his class come to school right after taking a shower. I asked what he meant and of course he said, well he still had the towel on his head. They became very good friends and to this day it is a story I tell.
