Not sure about the laser beam thing...unless ya stay awake to watch. There is a device that if something walks by it, it'll beep. Also...what about a motion light?

I like the TESLA coil option.
Laser beams work. So do passive intrusion devices.
Practically speaking the fence idea is the most practical. And they make good neighbors!

There are a number of infrared detection systems you can install. Here in Georgia it's deer season. If you want a picture, the sports stores sell a motion activated trail watcher camera. Camoflaged, easily concealed on a tree,etc...

My dad had something that they bought at Radio Shack like that (I think, or maybe out of a magazine, I'm sorry, I don't know the name). They put it in the ground between the driveways to the house and orchards, and it beeped inside the house when someone drove through it.

Call someone that sells security devices, don 't need to go to one that advertises on t.v., go to the little privately owner guy, same stuff, lower price. If you think someone is coming in your house, when you leave in the morning, sprinkle baby powder inside the threshold of the doors and in the garage. Cheap way to find out or stick your web cam/video recorder and watch it to see.
