Let x = the amount she started with
Then x/5 = the amount she spent the first time

Since she spent 1/5 the first time, she had 4/5 remaining.
So, 1/5(4x/5) = 4x/25 = amount she spent the second time
The total she spent was
x/5 + 4x/25 = 36

Multiply through the equation by the LCD which is 25. Then
5x + 4x = 36*25 = 900
9x = 900
x = 100
Since x = the amount she started with, she must have start with $100.

Check:
1/5(100) = 20 = amount spent the first time which leaves $80
1/5(80) = 16 = amount spent the second time

$20 + $16 = $36
