Today, I stood up for my wife at a sushi bar and (sad to say) I was not expecting the guy to hit me back for some reason. I never fought anyone before, but enough was enough with the obese jokes about my wife. Well, I suppose I should have taken karate lessons when I was younger. It's funny now I think about me flying over the tables...

The bad part about it was one of the guy's friends contacted my wife after we had left, and apologized. The friend said the guy was drunk, lonely, jealous and :( homosexual. She said he started talking about my wife because he had figured (for some reason unknown to me) I was gay.

Needless to say, that didn't brighten up the situation. The gays said they would pay for the damage. My wife thinks I should apologize as well... What do you think?

sounds like you're passive aggressive. You let these build up in you and it exploded last night.

Mistake #1: Never throw the first punch. Violence, once engaged, is a very slippery slope. Yelling at him, calling him a prime pipsqueaking a-s-s for making completely rude and offensive comments about your wife and embarrassing him in front of the whole restaurant was very much in order. And if you did it right, making sure EVERYONE KNEW that he made a "FAT" joke about your wife would have left him without a single solitary friend in the place, and that would've been great.

So you have to work on holding things in too much. When you hold things in, it makes your responses shaky and unthoughtful.

Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Rather than apologizing to this man, I would demand that "...a friend apologizing is not enough. The man that insulted my wife must apologize to her, and retract his insensitive, rude, heartless comment." It isn't about you. It isn't about him. It's about her. Take the high road, as often as possible. Chivalry.

Frankly, I think you should let them pay, also. We have to pay for the destruction we do when we're drunk. That guy sounds like a real idiot. He probably drove home, too. I'd apologize to the restaurant owner in private, but all the while explain your actions. The Japanese know about honor, believe me.

This sounds like it came straight out of one of those comedy/drama movies. Ouch. I'm soooo sorry about your evening. If it was me, I would apologize. One was extended to you & the courteous thing is to offer the same. It's also a way to keep from burning any bridges which is always a bad idea.

Who knows?? Something very good may yet come out of this & in the end, you might at least all be found laughing over the incident. The universe is a strange place and this sounds like a case of odd luck if ever I've seen one. There's more than one lesson to be learned in this.

You said "the guy hit me back"??

If you hit him first, you should offer to pay for part of the damage, and apologize. It wasn't nice for the guy to make obese jokes about your wife, but there are better ways to settle a dispute than hitting someone.

On the other hand, if he hit you first, you owe him no apology. And he should apologize to you in person, not through one of his friends.

You know what? She should be happy that her man was standing up for her. Even though the guy was a jerk. I think the other guy should apologize to your wife for the insults. If I was your wife I would fix you a meal fit for a king and love you even more. You go Rocky!!!!!

You were standing up for your wife, the smart thing to do would have been to confront him verbally and walk away, but sometimes our anger gets the best of us. I think you should apologize, even if he was a total azz it will give him some closure and you can end it.

No apology and until you know what the damage costs- don't offer to pay a thing. The place has insurance and if you agree to pay then it doesn't even matter who legally has to pay. It would be all on you. Good Luck!

I would not apologize until the guy who actually caused the damage apologized first. It was nice of his friends to apologize for him, but he needs to do it too.
But if your wife is adamant about you apologizing then I would go ahead and do it. Anyway, it would show you are the REAL man.
