You cant "unlock a hdd" however if you mean to use it on another system such as windows then you have to Format it. Formating is done when you have to change the file system of a hard drive so that the operating system can sit on and basically manage the files. Mac runs on HFS+ Journaled which is not compatible with windows.

If you wanted to lets say move the hdd to a computer with windows you will need a program such as Norton Partition Magic or any other partioner to erase the drive, format it with the NTFS file system, and then install w\e you like.

WARNING: IF FOR WHATEVER REASON YOU DO THIS, YOU WILL ERASE EVERYTHING OFF YOUR HDD. BACKUP EVERYTHING FIRST THEN PROCEED.

What do you mean by "unlock" a hard drive? You have to take the case off of any Mac to even get to the hard drive.

Check your ownership and permissions by selecting the hd in the finder, then going to File > Get Info. Set you as the owner, and give yourself permission to Read and Write. you must be Admin to do this. Also, it might be a good idea to run a Repair Disk in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities), because that repairs permissions on your disk.
