I'm not at all sure about free websites but the next time you are in WH Smiths look at the computer magazines there are often freebie Cd's on them with free search tools for ancestry search. It might take weeks or even months but something will turn up.

I have been going to my local library and they have ancestry.com library edition that contains a lot of information. Also depending on where your family is from the country might offer on line information. I attached 2 other links that might help.
