The Big Crunch (that's usually the scientific term for what happened before the Big Bang) was when all the matter which would go into making the universe was supercompressed. The incredible application of heat within the area caused that area to explode, and the receding of other galaxies from our own is the continued shockwave of that initial explosion about 15 billion years ago.

It is postulated that if there is enough matter in the universe at the end of the cosmos, when all the stars have burned out and expansion has stopped, that there may be a big crunch. It all depends on the amount of non-stellar (dark) matter out there. I wouldn't worry - it's like to be more than 100,000,000,000 years in the future.

All matter sucked into like a black whole and then compacted to a singularity the size of a pin head. This can not stay this way long and matter is spewed back out of the singularity with a huge explosion.
