Very sad...I too am 44 and it is too young to die. To make everything harder to deal with, he was killed by an other wise passive creature.
Then to think that two children have lost a DADDY...just adds to the sadness of his death. I watched him, his shows with my four children, we all loved him and feel this pain.
He was the most entertaining thing on television. He was not an actor. He did not just work at that Zoo. This was his life! Imagine to get paid doing what you normally would be doing. How great is that! He lived and worked for everything he stood for. You know what the saying is," Home Is Where The Heart Is!
He was to the animal kingdom what Princess Di was to orphans and war/land mine victims. I hope his life's passion will continue through his children. The world, Australia, Everyone has lost a great soul, no matter what your opinion of him was... It is sad, very sad.

G'day Gloria M,

Thank you for your question.

I watched Steve Irwin occasionally on television. I first saw him in Australia on The Footy Show.

His show was broadcast on free to air in Australia and I watched it occasionally.

Irwin was also involved in several media campaigns. He enthusiastically joined with the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service to promote Australia's strict quarantine/customs requirements, with advertisements and posters featuring slogans such as, "Quarantine Matters! Don't muck with it". His payments for these advertising campaigns were directed into his wildlife fund.

In 2004 he was appointed ambassador for The Ghan, the passenger train running from Adelaide to Alice Springs in the central Australian outback, when the line was extended all the way to Darwin on the northern coast that year. For some time he was sponsored by Toyota, in keeping with his rugged outback image.

His death has received the most attention internationally of any Australian that I can recall which has surprised me.

I enclose sources for your reference.

Regards

It was tragic, and surpising. I wouldn't have been so shocked if h got it from a croc or summint, but to be killed by a stingray (which are normally quite tame) is astonishing.

But in some ways it is comforting to know that he died quickly rather than a slow painful death. Everyone will miss him as that untamed croc hunter. He got a lot of respect for his contributions towards wildlife.

Bad news, they've already sold crocodilehunter.com

Yes we watched him all the time.... absolutely loved his enthusiasm. My favorite show was when his wife was driving the jeep and Steve was trying to rope a giraff of all things. He was watching the giraffe, Terri was watching Steve and next thing you know, she's run him into a tree, knocking him out of the jeep! He was bruised and his wife was horrified! I'm gonna miss him but I know we'll get to have the re-runs!

Only occasionally. I was turned off when he held his baby so close to that crocodile a few years ago. As a mom, it really bothered me. However, I have swam with sting rays before. I don't know if I will ever do that again.
