Okay now that I know what stripping of the membranes does, do you think that my doctor did that to me? She told me that she was going to try and stretch my cervix. I'm almost completely effaced and almost 2 cm dilated. Today is my due date. She had me lift my rear end and she dug in there for a while and it was kind of painful. I have been having braxton hicks contractions and cramps ever since and a lot more mucus (sorry kind of gross I know). Does it sound like she stripped my membranes? I'm not quite clear on the difference of that and stretching my cervix, if there is any difference.....

I believe it is the same. I had my membranes stripped for all three of my babies because I wanted them out! It usually made me have a little spotting and some cramps. The doctors basically did the same thing. They stick their finger in to the cervix and stretch it and also rub on the membrane that covers the baby. This releases a hormone, I believe, that cause the cervix to dilate and prepare for birth. It usaully worked the next day or day and a half for me! Congrats and hope you see you darling soon!

Unless your water broke she didn't ''strip your membranes''. She stimulated your cervix to see if it would dilate. IF this is your first child it can be a long process to get things going!

IF your water has broken you have to deliver within 24 hours because the baby is at risk for infection after that since it isn't in the sterile amniotic fluid.

Keep walking around and stretching. This helps things move along. Mucus is your plug letting go. You need to pass the mucus plug for the membranes to rupture (strip in your language) on their own. Once the water breaks it moves along with strong contractions to get your cervix dilated.

Nature will prevail in most cases, and your due date doesn't' mean anything to your baby who will come when ready unless there is a problem and that is what the doctor is for -- to watch for complications.

Relax....

It sounds like she stripped your membranes, which is effective in stimulating labor about half the time. There's no tool, they just use their fingers, and people say it's very painful. Lots of mucous, lots of cramping. Doesn't have anything to do with breaking your water.

I doubt it. When they strip your membranes they actually use a tool to do it. She probably just manipulated things with her fingers to get things moving along in there. Good luck with the birth! I hope it's an easy one.

Whatever she did she was trying to get you into labor and that is what counts. If i had to guess I would say it was the same thing.
