Jamestown, Virginia. Check this out from Wikipedia:

"The Virginia Colony at Jamestown was the first permanent English colony in what is now the United States to survive. It followed the failure of two earlier attempts including the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island to the south in what is now North Carolina. Jamestown is second only to St. Augustine, Florida as the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the present-day United States, the latter having been founded 42 years earlier (1565) by Spain."

Here's a direct quote from The American People by Addison-Wesley Educational Publishers Inc

In 1585, England gained a first foothold in a hemisphere dominated by Spanish and Portuguese colonizers. A reconnaissance expedition organized by Walter Raleigh, one of Queen Elizabeth's favorite courtiers, scouted the Carolina coast and hastened homeward carrying two natives and a string of tales about rich soil, friendly Indians, and mineral wealth. A second voyage in 1585 and a third in 1587, composed of 91 men, 17 women, and 9 children, planted a small colony on Roanoke Island. But the enterprise failed. The voyages to Roanoke were too small and poorly financed to establish successful settlements. They served only as tokens of England's rising challenge to Spain in North America and as a source of valuable information for colonists later settling the area.

Golly... if you are in the 12th grade I am afraid to find out what else you don't know. I mean how silly is that question? You can look that up in your textbook if you know how to read. But then again I shouldnt be surprised if you can't. Now you also have the internet in front of you and you could have easily looked that up. Children these days are so doggone lazy. Thats part of the reason why I will not hire any of them for summer jobs. Anytime you don't know how to do a Google or a Yahoo search for something like that, you are either very dumb or very lazy! I know the answer but I refuse to give on general prinicple. Do you own homework.. especially when it is as easy as letting the computer do the work for you.
