It's hard to say. Usually they are funded by public or private organizations. This means they are given some money up front to do a project, and when it is over they try to make a profit from whatever it is they accomplished. Then they usually have to pay back the money they borrowed.

well first off are you talking about spiders (arachno) or digging (archeo)? Either way I'm sure it would depend on who they worked for. They probably make less money working for a University as apposed to a private company. And besides I'm not sure a person who studies spiders is called an arachnologist but hey....
