- Being exposed to different writing styles can help you with yours
- Vocabulary -- you may run into words you normally wouldn't use or maybe not even know
- Structure - by reading different types of writing (novels, articles, non-fiction, texts etc.) you can observe how others structure their writing and learn from those techniques. This applies to all levels of structure in documents-- story, sentence, organization, etc.
- Ideas - you may see ideas for story plots or subjects in some writings and use those in yours or augment to get something new.

Yes it can. It can becasue by reading you learn how your own writing should be. Not plagarisim though. You can learn from what you read and learn to correct your own mistakes.
