Like you the original episodes will stay with me forever as Classics. The three prequels (the third being a half decent film), where a major let down after all the hype and expectation.
I feel storyline was forsaken at the expense of the films looking good. For me they where too much like computer games, the acting mechanical Ewan McGregor trying to sound like Sir Alec Guinness alone spoilt it for me, in my opinion it wasn’t natural coming from Mr. McGregor and simply didn't work.
You get the feeling that everyone involved in the prequels new they were part of something so massive that what ever they did was going to be given worldwide focus, and they simply couldn't live up to the billing.
I remember once hearing the original films described as "Cowboys and Indians in space”, to me this is part of why they worked so well. They were simple entertaining stories, a great cast and the special effects were years ahead of their time.
In terms of effects, there's now loads of big budget special effect movies, the public are no longer so easily amazed. Therefore it's a shame that Mr. Lucas in my opinion tried to gloss over a weak storyline with special effects. In doing so I believe he made it difficult for audiences to get any feeling for the characters, the scripts simply weren't deep enough for me, every schoolboy wanted to be Han Solo or Luke skywalker, can anybody say the same of the new characters.
My final advice don't let the prequels let you question the originals, most artists don't even get one masterpiece, George Lucas had three in a row.

Continuity. Lucas cemented my dismay in the closing of "Revenge of the Sith." The command is given near the end to shut down all droids, and Yoda also announces that he can teach Obi Wan to commune with his old teacher. It's like he set out to make the prequel trilogy better than the originals, and then tied up loose ends in the final 10 minutes of the third. There are so many things George Lucas threw in because he now had the money and technology. No regard was given, however, to seamlessness with the originals OR fan's expectations. Sure, it's cool to see Yoda fight, but it doesn't fit once you follow through all six movies. Long story short, the originals had heart and soul; the prequels have more explosions.

I dont get why anyone could put down the prequels other then Ep 1 being more for kids.
but they all follow a story line lucas wrote at least as far back as 1983 if not further (rumor of a book writen in 1975 or so that had all 9 eps in it).

Because the 'new' Star wars films are bloody awful. I mean. Jar jar binks? If every a character deserved to end up in a pickle jar it was him! And the titles - I know they were supposed to be homages to old-style flash Gordon adventures but that was then and this is now - 'The Phantom menace'? 'Attack of the clones'? Ple-ease. And while were at it, be fare - the original Star wars film wasn't that good, was it?

You know what bothers me the most about the quality of the latest films?
Through God knows how many months of filming, Lucas didn't even bother to look up how to spell "mitochondria." That's obviously the word he wanted. Instead he made up a new one. Jeez!!!
And after I saw "Attack of the Clones," my only comment was, "I expected more clones." "What?" said my boyfriend. "There were millions!" "Yeah, for five minutes," I said. "The other two hours should have been called 'Aniken Gets Laid.'"
I think you're going through a bit of the same painful disillusionment that any person goes through when they re-evaluate their religion. Lucas isn't perfect, sigh.

The "prequels" were garbage. Lucas got away from the story and relied on the special effects to carry the films.
He was too busy counting the money from the merchandizing to care to make a quality film.
Jar Jar. Pleease. How about "Loser Loser"? Call me one for paying money to see the stupid things.

Because they are horrible, horrible movies. Go to the link I provided, and read up on all the reasons to hate the prequels. Some of the stuff I knew had bothered me for some reason, but I didn't really know why until I read the article.

I was just wondering how you get three...consecutive...bad performances out of Natalie Portman.....three...in a row...
But then again if you can spend hundreds of millions of dollars making three 2 1/2 hour advertisements for toys...then it is easy to see what must be sacrificed in order to make them....story.
Story is what went out with the bathwater...
Lucas needed to go down in the CGI history books...and I do believe he has. ...at the expense of all of us who came to see Star Wars. I understand if you feel like you have been robbed.. You are not alone...trust me.

I like the prequels by themselves, but Lucas quite thoroughly screwed the 'extended universe' of comics, books and games, and that bugs me.
