I'll tell you why. Both Titanium and Iron are abundant in earth. Iron exist mostly as Iron(III) Oxide and Titanium exist mostly as Titanium Oxide. These are the ways to extract the metals.

Iron: Haematite (Fe2O3) is put into a blast furnace with limestone and coke with hot air fed into the furnace at the bottom. The temperature inside the furnace reaches about 1600 degree celcius and molten iron is collected.

Titanium: The oxide is heated with carbon and chlorine to produce a covalent liquid, TiCl4. TiCl4 is then heated in a furnace with magnesium, which displaces the less reactive titanium. The last step of extraction is when the problem comes in. Hot titanium absorbs molecules of air which make the metal brittle and useless. So, the whole furnace must be smothered with argon gas until the hot titanium has cooled down. The same procedure must be used when objects are being fabricated out of titanium.

After looking at the two above extraction processes, it is now obvious why titanium is more expensive than iron.

I hope that helps. =)

I would imagine it's the old supply-and-demand issue. Titanium, I guess, is harder to come by or maybe it's harder to put into a useful form (like golf clubs).
