giant african land snails, will only smell if the tank isn't cleaned on a regular basis, keep them in a glass or plastic tank with a lid, the ground medium should be kept moist, use bark chip which you can but at any reptile retail outlet. feed them on fresh vegetation which should be changed on a daily basis, whilst they do like lettuce and cucumber (which provide moisture) they will also eat a range of green leaves and fruit, makes sure these are free from pesticides as you don't want to poison and kill your snails. make sure you keep a cuttle fish in the tank as this provides calcium which helps them maintain a strong shell, you will be able to hear them eating it if you listen carefully, spray them once a day to keep their environment moist and keep them at room temperature, don't leave them in direct sunlight or let them get too cold, if in doubt attach a heat mat to the back of the tank, again you can purchase these at a reptile retail outlet.
hope this is help full to you, enjoy your pets.

They are very easy to keep, they don't smell unless you leave their food in to rot, live for about 5/6 years, need a plastic tank for around £% from your local pet store, change layer (couple of inches) of compost - from your garden centre, once a week/ fortnight depending how much he has pood! Keep soil very moist- water it thoroughly every day or so, eats cucumber, and most other fruit and veg, but does seem to prefer cucumber, very moist foods, also provide cuttle fish for calcium- are sold for birds so easy to find, keep it on a light bright window sill, if you don't feed it/ water it for a few days/ it is too cold it'll hibernate and wake up when you water it and feed it or it gets warmer, so can be left to go on holiday etc. I have never seen any in pet shops, I got mine from a friend who probably still has heaps if your in the norwich area, can apparently buy them on electric avenue in Brixton very cheaply, intended for food, but can take them home as a pet too, I'm sure a pet shop in your area would know where to get one for you, be able to send you to the right place, I bought my tank at an idependant store where they seemed knowledgable so it might be best to go to one of them rather than pets r us or whatever, they enjoy being handled as it's warm for them, if you put 2 snails in together you will get babies as they are hermaphrodites. Very easy pets.

we keep giant african snails in our classrooms, if you make sure you remove any of the rotting lettuce leaves you don't really get a smell at all!! we keep them in plastic fish tanks that have ventilation in the top...make sure you keep the soil REALLY moist, as well as the snails themselves - just a simple water spray bottle does the trick. They are very easy to look after, seem really hardy and breed quite well! they make such interesting pets!!!

I don't know but the garden in India was crawling with the damned things and all I seemed to be doing was crushing them as they did so much damage.

Your son is extremely weird! Why a giant snail? What if someone stands on it?
