Which came first - the chicken or the egg? "The chicken" came first - in the sentence of the question. If the question is phrased differently, the answer is different.
Reframing the question

It could be said that the question simply requires one to know the context. Most people thinking of the question automatically think of the timeline and it is in this manner that both the previous evolutionary theory and religious teachings contexts arise. Other potential contexts are:

* Having looked through a dictionary from front to back, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?
* When you walked through the supermarket, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?
* When reading the menu, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?

If you believe in God, then the chicken came first. An egg can't hatch without a chicken to sit on it.

If you believe in evolution, then the egg came first. Assuming you have a very precise definition of a chicken(preferablly at the DNA level), then at some point in history an animal that wouldn't be consided a chicken gave birth to an egg that contain a chicken. This is because most mutation happens when we were still only a few cells.

According to Aristotle, actuality takes precedence over (comes first before) potentiality. Eggs become chickens, chickens do not become eggs (they lay eggs, they don’t become eggs). Therefore an egg is a chicken in potentiality, but a chicken is a chicken in actuality. Therefore the chicken came first.

The egg evolved millions of years before the chicken did. Chickens, as with all birds, look to have evolved from feathered dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were laying eggs for millions of years before they could be called "birds". Ergo, eggs came first.

The chicken. When God created the animals, he created the chicken, not the egg. It says in the Bible that He created all living things.
