greeting cards are sometimes designed in Shockwave, Flash, java or Macromedia etc. It is possible that your pc doesn't have that program under which the card was created.

It depends on the site she sent them from. I know a lot of online greeting cards are going the whole Flash route. You're problem may be due to not having the updated Shockwave/Flash version. Try going to the Adobe site listed to get the latest version and see if that helps. http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi

Maybe its coming through like a pop up, if you have a blocker, try holding down the control button when you click on it.

Don't know. But it could be the site she is getting them from. Tell her in a kind way to go to a different site and see if you have better luck.

You probably need to download Flash or Java:

Flash:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Java:
