it's a variable that depends on other factors....ex. you having to pee is dependent on drinking the more you drink the more you will need to pee....or the more you drive the more you will need to buy gas

Before you know what a dependent variable is, you have to know... The Independent Variable - The independent variable is the thing that you change in the experiment. All the other things in your experiment should stay the same. ("I" change the independent variable.)

The dependent variable is the thing that changes because of the independent variable. (The dependent variable DEPENDS on the Independent variable.)

And you didn't ask, but I'll also tell you that the control is the group in which nothing changes at all.

Suppose my experiment is "What type of fertilizer produces the most plant growth?" A group of plants of the exact same height is divided into five groups. Each of four groups is given a different type of fertilizer. The fifth group is given only water. At the end of one month, plants are measured.

The independent variable is the type of fertilizer, because "I" change it. The dependent variable is how high the plants get. And the control is the plant given no fertilizer.
