Austin is the best choice, obviously. If you would rather be somewhere smaller, there are many smaller cities in North Texas such as Flower Mound, Colleyville, Corinth, or Prosper. Real Estate in Texas is relatively inexpensive, so $300,000 will get you a very nice home-Probably around 2500-3000 sq. feet.

I personally know of a property in Mission, Texas, located just off a country club golf course this is selling for an asking price of $289,000. It is a large house with 4 BR, 3350 SF, a swimming pool and many other extras, like 3 living areas, an office, maid's room, reverse osmosis water and a water softener.
It is a great deal. the house is 3 years old and the owner is ready to sell and move.

I'm sure the owner might even come down more in the price.

Try contacting a local real estate agent. They will know everything there is to know about affordable, safe, maybe even liberal areas. A really good website to browse local real estate/real estate agents is: http://www.realestateforsaleintexas.com

It's really easy to navigate and is full of info about realtors with links to their personal websites. Most of their websites will have all the available homes/rentals in the area along with community info, so you can do some research before you contact anyone. Hopefully that works for you. Good luck!

Ignorant is subjective.

$300K will buy you a very nice place in San Antonio.
