because aim (AOL Instant Messenger (R)) came with these headachey sounds that you can use to alert you if/when someone comes on line. There is the moo, the cash drawer and the fump noise (also known as the you've got new mail noise). So someone might get used to someone "mooing" when they come online. I moo often.

Wow... I know someone who says moo a lot... I always figured they were just insane... Other people actually say it...?
