Space Mountain is like any other roller coaster... there's a train of carts, one person per seat. There's three seats per cart, and two carts per coaster. There's no way to set the child on your lap on a roller coaster, especially not this roller coaster. A bar comes between your legs and rests on your lap.
Here's a picture of the coaster and the seating arrangement...

You'll probably have to do the trade-off thing. Have fun, though!
The child who meets the height requirements should go on! It's a lot of fun, and it's very mild. There's only a couple very small hills, nothing "stomach dropping." It doesn't go upside down or anything, and it doesn't even go that fast (it doesn't exceed 30 M.P.H.) It's in the dark, so that's the only thing that may make it scary. You can't see what's coming up, so your mind expects the worse, but afterwards you're like, "Wow!" It's just so much fun!
* I don't know why people keep telling you your son can sit next to you on this roller coaster. I don't believe those people have ever even been on the ride, considering the seats sit in a single file line. There's one seat per person, and there's only room for people to sit in front of you or behind you.

I am not sure if a child of 5 would like Space Mountain... even though they can ride because they are tall enough, it is completely dark inside and you can't see where you are going, the coaster is fast, and takes sudden drops.
He will NOT be able to sit on your lap and difinitely CANNOT sit next to you! The ride is situated for single riders to sit behind one another. A lap bar comes over your lap to keep you safe.
I went on it when I was 10 for the first time. I was a little scared, but still went on it. I did like it, but not as much because I was worried the whole time.
Now, if your child is not afraid of the dark and loves coasters, then he should be fine!!
If your other child cannot ride then you can do a rider switch. It is a separate line for adults with kids. What happens is while one adult waits with the child that cannot ride, the other adult rides, then when they are finished the other adult goes in line to ride. You get a ticket for this so you don't have to wait in the line twice. The attendant at the front of the line has them.

Are you talking about Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL or Disneyland in CA? Disney World only has one person per seat but there is 6 people to a car, so he could sit right in front of you. I am pretty sure Disneyland~CA seats ARE different.
If he is the least bit interested in going I would definitely bring him on with you. I know I regret not going on when I was six~ I love the ride now.

The child has to sit alone, they do not let you hold children on your lap, I think he will like it, but it is dark so it might be a little scary, that would be your call. But if he meets the requirements it should be fine. Take him on Thunder mountain first and then say if you like that would you want to go on one in the dark?? that might help him know what is going to be like! HAVE FUN!!!!!

there is only one person to a seat, however, you can ride in the same "car" as your little one. However, I must admit, depending on the child, he might be terrified of the coaster. It was hard for many 7-8 year olds to get through with out a break down. My suggestion would be the trade off, unless he REALLY REALLY wants to go.

No... Disney does not allow anyone to ride in anyone's lap. He would sit next to you. If he is over 48inches, they will allow him to ride it. But if you think it might be too much for him, then just hold off until he's about 7.

They won't let your child ride on your lap, but if he is tall enough, he can ride next to you.
