It's got to be New Order.
Most people wrote of the remaining members of Joy Division when Ian Curtis committedsuicide, believing that the remaining members could not survive as a group. However I admire Bernard Sumner as he decided to take the risk pf going indie-synth, with a much more commercial sound which equally worked, combining keyboards with the existing guitar based musix.
New Orders music has the double beauty of being both higly commercial but also highly reflective of the emotional depression and also the bands own bitterness, for example Blue Monday revolves around drugs, emotional abuse and it is also suggested that the song is about Ian Curtis, who himself was deeply depressive, moody and troubled. Indeed Bernard Sumner has said that for him, the music was about the loss of his childhood and a part of his life.
The group hadcrossed the boundaries of music, created a sond which has embedded itself into mainstream culture. Pretty good for a band who were written off .

Probably the Bee Gees or the Hollies.

And Oasis sucks, always have, always will. Any band that has a singer that makes Ozzy Osbourne seem clear and coherent is not good. Annoying to millions.
