Harpo was Adolph, but his name was changed to Arthur when Adolph became an unpopular name, particularly in the Jewish community. Chico was Leonard, Groucho was Julius, Zeppo was Herbert and Gummo was Milton. Their family name was indeed Marx and their mother's name was Minnie. At one point they were known as Minnie's Boys. They had a vaudeville act that was a precursor to the films they would make in later life.

they were born new york the sons of german immigrants and were called julius henry [groucho1895-1977] leonard [chico 1891-1961] adolf arthur [harpo1893-1964] and herbert [zeppo 1901-1979] they began their stage career in vaudeville in a team called the six musical mascots that included their mother minnie [d.1929] and an aunt. another brother milton [gummo 1894-1977] he left the act early on.
