I kind of know what you mean -- thinking you were "born as the wrong sex" is simply different from being gay or bi.

I BELIEVE they are lumped together because people in each of these groups experience a lot of the same problems from the same roots -- mostly religious intolerance and general ignorance about what's going on with them.

As they share similar problems and interests (in legal and social acceptance), they have banded together.

I think.

Transgender transsexual (not the same thing) people are generally lumped in with the LGBs. It's a bit of an unhappy marriage but is in many ways beneficial to T people. The T community is far smaller than the gay one and the sharing of resources does bring considerable benefits. Additionally a fair percentage (between 20 and 30%) of T people (M to F) go through a gay or have a gay sexual preference. In some ways they are the lucky ones because after they transition they have no trouble with going with str8s. A lot of M to Fs end up being lesbian, because although the body changes the preference doesn't.
Also in many countries transsexuals who have not yet transitioned find themselves marginalized and obliged to work in the sex industry to support themselves. This seems to be more true of repressive countries than the progressive ones, where a transition may be funded by the local health insurance system. Consequently Ts find themselves providing sex services to men in what is essentially a homosexual act, and which entails all the risks of gay sex in addition to the many risks that prostitution involves. (violence, drug abuse, poor working conditions, emotional stress, etc). So LGB is a welcome port in the T storm.

It /is/ a medical condition, but the LGBT movement has political and social presence, and without it's attachment, transgendered rights would be virtually nonexistant. There are relatively few trans people, and zillions upon zillions of L/G/B folks, so hitching to that particular wagon gives transgendered people more power and voice in society.

Some people get a change because their lover could conceivably love them better that way. Take the effeminate boy who some homosexual latched onto. The homosexual is thinking, he's one like me and he likes the female role, which is why he's effeminant. The effeminant is taking the female role because he feels, inwardly, he is, should be, or could be, a female, so that part is natural. Some of the fodder that some gays feed on is not really gay. As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and so here is someone who walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and we assume he is a duck in the company of ducks. It is a fine line and they don't really fit elsewhere.

Actually, NOW has a problem. They want to be open because some of their strongest supporters are lesbians. Yet men who become women are not the kind of woman they intended to support. Women who become men, likewise, are almost traitorous--except they are still supporters of the cause.

If I had a sex change, since I like women, that would make me a lesbian. But if others knew my identity and former life saw me (as a woman) date and marry a man, then they would lump me as a homosexual. In that case, were I to join the T in that group, one way or the other, someone would identify me as either the L or the G (and since if I were to marry a man but still like women, that would also add the B to the applicable letters). Sort of defines the duck then, doesn't it?

A transgendered person is one who believes that their real gender identity is that of the opposite sex (example: a man who believes he really should have been born a female). It's not necessarily a medical condition although there have been transgendered persons who have undergone gender reassignment surgery.

Being gay is not a preference either, trust me if it was a preference...no one would be gay, why would someone want to put themselves trough the torture, the remarks...the pain of being gay. Is is not a preference that is why transgender is included. And for Not Yo Momma, you need to be educated.

I could be wrong, but I think a transgendered person feels like he or she is of the opposite sex, and they are attracted to the same sex.

A girl could feel like she's a male, but attracted to girls.

I just lost myself.

Very simply, because until the person can actually have gender reasignment surgery their preference is still concidered "homosexual".
