I have a laptop now, but I'd like to get a new one soon. Would I be able to transfer all my files, etc to the new one somehow? What would I have to do to get everything on one laptop to the other so that everything is pretty much the same, just with an updated computer?

there are two options
1. using "migwiz"
start-->run-->type migwiz
it will guide you through the process of tranfering everything to new computer(study the intro. page for method of transfer)
In the new PC run the wizard again and apply the files and settings to the new PC.

most of the users don't know about this option!!! They go for the next alternative...

2. Backing up the data(this doesn't give all the func as the 1st one)
start-->run-->type ntbackup

the wizard will help select and backup data, select location for storing and then copy it to a media(usb drive/cd) then install ur OS and run the ntbackup again and restore the data.

You won't be able to just copy everything and it works just the same. You will probably have to reinstall Windows at least because if you change the motherboard on Windows, it crashes on startup 99% of the time. You should just save and transfer important files and reinstall everything else.
