The files that cannot defrag are in use. Run defrag in safe mode to get most (if not all) of the files (F8 just as Windows starts to load).

★★ CHKDSK AND DEFRAG ★★

◙ WHILE RUNNING THE TWO FOLLOWING PROGRAMS YOU MUST CLOSE ALL YOUR OTHER WINDOWS. YOU CANNOT USE YOUR COMPUTER FOR ANYTHING ELSE WHILE DOING THE FOLLOWING OR YOU'LL RECEIVE ERROR MESSAGES.

◙ Before you can run the Defragmentation program on your computer's drives (hard drive, floppy, flash etc.) you have to make certain that your drives have no disk errors on them. Otherwise, the Defrag program will not be able to do it's job.

◙ In Windows you can use the CHKDSK utility to list and repair these errors. Below is a tutorial for running this utility. If this is too difficult for you then you will need to get someone else to do it for you. Maybe there is a local computer club that can help you with it. If not then you'll need to take it to a certified computer technician. Don't take it your cousin or uncle to save a few dollars. They might cause you more problems than they will save you.

◙ Once you have fixed all the errors it is time to run the Defrag Utility. This is the easy part. To run the Defrag Utility click on the Start Button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Defrag

◙ TIP: In Windows versions before XP you have a utilty called ScanDisk. This old relic isn't included in Windows XP. It removed errors on your hard drive but would take more than 24 hours to work on large hard drives like we have today.

Hi. System files are sometimes in a reserved place and will not defrag. Some 3rd party software can sometimes fix this.

It's usually only a small amount that stays fragged. Your defrag program usually tells you how many fragments per file there are.

defragment will not move files which are in use and it will also not move some system files.
