I have a 10 gallon tank with three female bettas and I'm in the market for a new filter. It needs to be quiet, gentle, and preferrably cheap. What do you use in your betta tank and how well does it work? Information on brands and models would be appreciated, as well as price (I'm a college student so budget it kind of a big deal).

Bettas don't need the aeration, but the filtration is good for them. In an unfiltered bowl you'd need to fully change the water every 4-7 days. (Filters remove ammonia, and nitrites.) Females are generally stronger swimmers than males as they generally have shorter fins. So they tend to not get sucked into the intake. For only 3 betta in a 10 gallon tank you really don't need an expensive filter if you do regular weekly gravel vacuuming.

-Hanging tank filter with a dry/wet wheel like a Penguin 100.
-An intank filter like a Hagen Elite Stingray which has a separate carbon media from the biological filter medium.

Any filter will work, but be sure avoid filters that integrate the biological filter, and the carbon filter. A biowheel, or biosponge will give bacteria a place to convert ammonia, and nitrite to nitrates. Many filters only have the one filter bag. So when you replace it takes weeks for the bacteria to repopulate it.

I have several but the best one is my Penguin Bio Wheel Mini for a 10-gallon. It is completely silent, aside from soft trickling water, and has the added benefit of a bio-wheel. As far as Bio-Wheels go they are a beneficial addition. They take standard Penguin Size A cartridges and have a reminder sticker on the side incase you forget what size you need. These external power filters don’t offer much room for customization but for my 10-gallons simple and cheap is better for me and it sounds like it is for you too.

Bettas do not need a filter, because they mostly go to the surface to breathe. I don't remember the specifics, but I know that they have two mechanisms for breathing, so they're not like everyday fish.
