It basically mean that the player's injury is severe enough that they don't anticipate him being able to play that year. If he becomes healthy during the season, he still cannot come back until the following season. It's a risk, but by placing them on IR, a team opens up a roster spot for someone else.

If a player is put on IR prior to the start of the regular season then they are done for the year. However, once the season starts a player can be put on IR and he'll be unavailable to play for 6 weeks but can be brought back to play this year. It all depends on WHEN they were put on IR....before the season starts or after.

It means that the player is physically unable to play football. I think that if the player becomes healthy by the end of the season that he can play the remainder, but that doesn't happen to often.

he is not able to play. once a player is put on injured reserve their season is over period. they can't play again til preseason of next yr
