How do I make letters multi-colored and in a block type form?

I am new with computers and had someone im me with mulitcolored letters.I asked how he did that he said in preferences?i have no idea what he was talking about ,I appreicate any help,thanks

Probably in the font type, size and color. These options should be in the IM window you are typing in.

what IM are u using, different ones are different
