There are some new medications that help a person overcome addiction. They are only part of the solution because they can take away some of the immediate cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

It sounds like you are highly motivated. Given that, you are half way to being sober. But you really must have treatment for this to work, even with medication.

I suggest contacting various large reputable 12-step recovery programs and get into one immediately. Also ask if they work in a complimentary way with the detox portion and with medication.

I hate to see you fall hard, but there is not a sure shot way to overcome addiction to alchohol within a day. Rather than being discouraged about that, I hope you will take your enthusiams and determination and really make a recovery program work!

12-steps words to live by:

SERENITY PRAYER

"God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change,
courage to change the things we can,
and wisdom to know the difference."

(copy these words and read them daily.... they apply to every day life,)

For many years, long after the Serenity Prayer became attached to the very fabric of the Fellowship's life and thought, its exact origin, its actual author, have played a tantalizing game of hide and seek with researchers, both in and out of A.A. The facts of how it came to be used by A.A. a half century ago are much easier to pinpoint.

Early in 1942, writes Bill W., in A.A. Comes of Age, a New York member, Jack, brought the Serenity Prayer to everyone's attention a caption in a routine New York Herald Tribune obituary.

I live by it!

Sorry, but there's no such thing. Alcoholism is a life-long addiction, and there are no quick cures. There are remissions, however, which are periods of time you are not drinking any booze. There are alcoholic rehabilitation centers that can help rid your system of alcohol, but that's only one part of the equation. You need to stay sober.

Alcoholism is not something you can fight by yourself. You need help. Go to A.A. meetings where you will come in contact with recovered alcoholics. I say "recovered" because they have made the decision not to drink, but if they had even one shot of alcohol, they would be off the wagon again. So join A.A. and get the encouragement from this outstanding support group. You'll be glad you did. You will not only keep away from drinking, but you'll eventually be able to help others similarly afflicted. Good luck to you!

Look at yourself in the mirror. Do you like what you see? What have you done in the past week? Do you like what you've done? You need to occupy your mind and body with positive things. But within a day or two? No. You absolutely need to enter a rehabilitation program. You can quit for a few days sure, but unless you can honestly trust yourself (and I do not think you can, because you are asking Yahoo Answers), you need the intervention of a second party. I am not referring to a bottle. Talk to someone. You have to get yourself out of this, and do not think that anyone can do it in a day or two. It takes years to undo years of damage and thinking a certain way. I wish you all the luck in the world, but you have to have the strength or the hope to develop the strength.

Ain't going to happen. Addiction is a lifelong illness. Get involved in a 12-step program. Get a sponsor, and get with a certified addictions counselor. Good luck.

Involve yourself with something that demands complete attention both mental and physical. If you have hobbies like mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting or tracking, take a break and go to some distance place and involve yourself completely in them. Believe it, that when totally exhausted, every person, will came down to three basic necessities, food, water, air and nothing else.

Jail will help.

I got really drunk, smashed glasses and plates and stuff. My wife had me arrested. After 2 days in jail, I decided to behave myself and haven't had a drink since.

Just stop drinking thats all. AA is a club for losers, don't go there unless you can't stop. Of course it depends on how much you are currently drinking. If you feel you may have withdrawal symptoms, consult your doctor, there are meds they can give you to help you out.
Good Luck!

You cannot overcome an addiction to anything in a day or two.

Get involved in so much stuff that you don't even have much time to drink, or feel like it. I would say join clubs, that kind of thing.

Handcuff yourself to your children and see if you will take them into a joint like that.....Because you bring it home to them when you come home......Better yet handcuff yourself to your mom and see if you get a mouth full of teeth.
