personally, i think anything north of the wynn Resort and Treasure Island is more slummy / unsafe. there's the new strip and the old strip.... I would say anything between the New Frontier hotel and the Stratosphere is questionable and are part of the old strip..(this would include, circus circus, riviera, stardust, westward ho, sahara, LV hilton) ...this is why these hotels are much cheaper... as a travel agent, i normally don't recommend this area,, unless budget is the #1 concern ... i would say the newer part of the strip is between Wynn Resort and Mandalay bay.......anywhere between there i am very comfortable and of course the prices reflect it.... with that being said, i would say that bellagio, flamingo, bally's, paris, boardwalk are more central.. you can check out http://www.ilovevegas.com/whatson_directions.php for a map

I guess I would say Bellagio and Caesars Palace would be about the middle. If safety is a concern I wouldn't really judge the strip by saying the "middle" is the safest though. I mean if you go farther south you have the Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Four Seasons, all decent properties. (Another farther south of the Four Seasons gets to be "slummy", as you say) Going north towards Downtown is the Mirage, Treasure Island (or as the refer to it now TI at the Mirage) and Venetian. Farther north than the Venetian the properties are older and some may deem the area more "slummy" like the New Frontier, Stardust, Westward Ho, Circus-Circus, Riviera, Sahara, and the Stratosphere. To me anything closer to Downtown after the Stratosphere starts to get "dicey" in my opinion.

Bellagio, Ceasars Palace, Mirage, Alladin, Paris, New York New York, Monte Carlo they are all kind of lumped in in the middle
I went to Vegas by myself years ago, stayed at The Excalibur, which is surrounded by Luxor and MGM and felt safe as long as I stayed anywhere along the strip. They also have free trollies that will take you up and down the strip. They have a monorail that is great, but I don't think I'd take it at night, the station locations are a little isolated, but it is great for day time.
I have also stayed at the Bellagio - top quailty if you want to indulge

you could almost stay anywhere on the strip, I just wouldn't recommend any of the older casino/hotels to stay in......shara,imperial palace, circus circus, flamingo, ballys, are probably some of the oldest, don't stay there.
