I believe what was shown in Young Guns 2.Him being killed by Pat Garrett seemed more like a fairy tale than him surviving.Besides the Kid was cool,Garrett was a jerk.

After his escape from Pat Garrett he was shoot to death in 1881. I remember this from another movie called Billy the Kid. I also remembered learning the same thing in school in our history class about the wild west. Pat Garrett and his posse tracked Billy down and shot him dead in 1881.

I don't know enough about it to say. I know the second Young Guns movie follows a story like that but my guess is it's probably not true. It's very common for people to fabricate different theories around a legendary figure like that. Just look at all the people that theorize that Jim Morrison is still alive or Elvis or Hitler.

I'd say it's possible but without solid proof it will remain unknown.
