At what age would it be appropriate? If ever.

That's an interesting question. I'm a teacher and hear kids say "That sucks!" all the time.

I don't think the word in and of itself is a vulgar term. However, I think what is silently understood about the phrase is what is vulgar. If someone says "that sucks" -- one might think, 'sucks what?' -- and this is where the term gets vulgar. I've heard older kids say things like "That sucks (insert body part here)".

While both phrases are supposed to mean the same thing, as in something's not good, and one can be said pretty innocently, it wasn't originally meant to used that way.

So, to finally answer your question, I think it could be used in a vulgar manner and parents should try to dissuade their kids from saying it at all.

My parents still get offended if I say that something "sucks". I don't think it is an appropriate word for children. As for what age is appropriate? I dont know, maybe when they get introduced to algebra it should be allowed for them to say it, lol.

Well if you are using it as "this sucks" then it is ok for kids to use, because it's not a bad word. But if you a thinking differently then no way.

Suck is one of the infant reflex actions, and it certainly isn't vulgar. Besides, how would straws work without it?

When I was in high school (1962-1966) the saying something "sucks" (or even worse, that someONE "sucks") was commonly understood to refer to fellatio. Therefore, a kid who "sucked" (in my all boys' high school) was being called a homosexual, or in common terms, a "queer." It was VERY vulgar and we NEVER would have used it "in mixed company."

i don't think it's vulgar but then i don't have a problem with any words. if they're your kids than you decide. don't let someone else tell you how to raise your kids.

"Suck" is a word just like ***, yeah it could be a donkey or it can be used as a vulger word too. Depends on the use; kids should be educated on the uses.

I believe it has vulgar origins. However, it's all over popular culture these days and probably has lost its original conotation.
