Is it possible to change the background - whether it be on answers on word on im whatever - getting sore eyes at looking at white all the time - is it possible to do this please ?

Also is it possible to say - have a beige background for answers and maybe lightblue for word for example and purple for I.M.

And having done all this, if you change your mind - is it easy to undo either individually or overall ?

You can change the background color in your browser. However, it does not override some webpages, like Y!A, but it will override others. To do this:

Start Menu
Contol Panel
Internet Options
On the General tab page (1st page of the pop-up screen) click Colors at the very bottom.
Make sure that Windows colors is not checked
Click on the box (left side) next to Background
Select the color you want
(You can change the font color here too but it works the same as the background - it won't effect the font color on the blazing white background of Y!A)
Click OK 3 times (once per screen)

Again, this does not change the background color for all web sites but it will for alot of them like Yahoo 360.

The other answers regarding IMVironments is correct. And each program has its own background color picker so you have to set each one individually, ie., MS Word, Web Browser, IM, etc. Choosing a background for one program will not override the background in another program.

You can change the background theme of Yahoo messenger chat window and replace it with an aquarium background, some of your favorite comic strip characters, and a few interactive themes. Click the IMVironment link in the chat window for choices. Sorry, a solid color background does not appear to be available. You can change the font color by clicking the FORMAT button (The little "T" on a color pallet) in a chat window, and selecting the color you want, or in Messenger Preferences, Appearances options.

Right click on the desktop
Select Properties
Click on the Appearance tab
From there you can change the color of all kinds of things, inclduing the background color of documents.
Web sites are another issue. Those colors are not controlled by your computer. They are set by the creator of the web site. So you do not have the ability to easily change those.
