I have been performing for more than 20 years. I have recently been in some major commercials and have small parts in 2 movies coming out next year. What is the best way to get represented in the LA market?

Agencies get hundreds of mailed submissions every week. So just mailing your headshot will not get you far.

Try something a little different. Stick out from the crowd. I had a British friend send a tea bag and instructions on how to make a proper cup of English tea. The last step was to sit back and enjoy the tea while reading his resume. He got calls. During the holidays, I did a mailing on parchment paper written in old English in calligraphy urging the reader to remember what Scrooge learned on Xmas Eve and helping poor souls like myself - I got calls.

Target specific agents within an agency - not just the agency - it might get past the assistant. Remember, there are up and coming agents looking for new talent. Make sure the agents you target also specialize in your age group.

If you have any connection through friends, that's a great place to start. Shoot for agencies that take new people. Don't even bother with huge agencies like CAA, etc.

Put up a web site and make sure there is video of some of your work for them to see. I did it for my daughter and when we do a mailing, she gets tons of traffic and has even gotten auditions from it.

Good luck.

Send a headshot/resume to the agents that you want to represent you. If they like what they see the will call you.

It's very competitive. Also, you can be ruled out by minor things on your resume, such as the college where you studied acting and graduated. It may not be "up to" their standards. Or, they may not like an acting teacher listed on your resume. It can get very personal, but, don't let that stop you from pursuing them.

If you are pitching yourself to an agent for commercials, be sure you submit your headshot/resume to commercial agents.

As a former talent agent, I always told actors to send me updated headshot/resumes and to send me postcards when they were performing and to indicate "Industry Comp" is available for the performance!

The Ross Reports has names/addresses of talent agents and casting directors. Since the agents do not know you, your headshot resume is your "calling card," to them.
