I've come across this. What you have to do is call your health insurance company first. Explain the hospital is billing you this amount. They will be able to tell you if they can. Usually through the insurance they have to only bill a set amount. Then call the hospital after you find out what happened with your insurance.

Did you READ your policy? You might find some "Stipulations" in the summary of benefits. Does your insurance cover the hospital, the surgeon, do you have an HMO, PPO, does your insurance cover only a certain percent on "emergency visits," was this an emergency, or do you have a 15,000 deductible? This are things you should have looked at before the surgery. If you cannot pay the rest, talk to the billing department, the doctor etc. Explain your situation and see if you can get a discount" or work out a payment plan....keep in mind you might get several bills....one from the doctor, anesthisia, radiology, labs, hospital etc...make sure you get a detailed bill and a copy of the medical records. You might want to go over this with your doctor and see if there were any mistakes.....I recently purchased the book "Healthcare for Less" by Michelle Katz after hearing her on the radio. There is a section on this that would be very helpful and is basic.....it teaches you ways you can save money, even if you have insurance that will not cover the full amount. You can purchase it at www.amazon.com or go to you local BArnes and Noble and ask for them to point you in that direction. I am in the medical field and even I learned a bunch of things about saving money in healthcare!

You need to review your insurance policy and see if you have any deductibles.
