You have old pipes and they are coroding somewhere (possibly from too much iron in your water supply).

That could be because of old pipes. Or oxidized pipes meeting none oxidized pipes.
also copper pipes meeting silver color pipes can cause that. Suggest changing your pipes
if you can't afford that then rust proof your pipes and then wait 36 hours before you use the pipes! There might be a leak in the pipes letting rusty water in it! Have a plumper check
things up and fix the problems!

Depending on the cause, the water may be safe to drink but just taste nasty. (We had a well which had clay in it, after it was filtered out the water was okay but had a clay taste)
You need to get it tested to find out what kind of contaminants are in it. Call the water supplier. If you live in an apartment the management should take a sample and get it tested.
If you own the house, get it tested. It could be a number of things. If you do laundry and it gets in the clothing, it will set and the clothing wil lbe permanently stained. It will also damage your pipes if this is a long term problem.
Again - document when it occurs (time of day, day of week, water temp), then get it tested. Note - if it is only hot water, replacing the water heater will take care of the problem.

I'm on a well, have been for 36 years. It's iron in the ground water. It can be common in some areas. Water softeners and filters can deal with the issue.

hey. they make tablets for your water softener with rust remover built in. its only about another dollar a bag. sams club and costco and home depot all have them. anyway, thats what you should do before you hire a plumber. theyll probably just go ahead and tell you to buy some. good luck.

Probably chlorine. Filter your water before you drink it.

Too much iron. We have that too. Alot of wells in our area are high in iron concentration. Try getting a filtration system a water specialist can help you with that.

Most likely, it's not rust, but minerals in the groundwater. You should have it tested to find out if it's even drinkable anymore.
