Look up ODBII.

Depending on the age of your vehicle, there should be an ODBII connector under the dash somewhere. You can get the cable & software on ebay, all you need then is a laptop.

What can be done depends on the software and your truck. Most OSBII softare can view engine performance data, show many sensor readings & graph & store it. Also they will show you the engine codes. Some software can change settings. You would need to look at the software's capabilities.

If you want to "tune" for performance, yes there are several that do just that. One of them is HYPERTECH.
It plugs into your OBD II diagnostic port and "talks" with your engine's PCM. It reads the PCM number and VIN information, and reads the current PCM programming. From there you have the option of changing many of the parameters, and the tuner will retain the factory settings for your vehicle, so that you can go back to the original programming.
They run about $400.00 to $475.00, and can be located at websites and speed shops nation wide.
