The Rijksmuseum is filled with Dutch 17 century paintings. Ten euro it costs. The Stedelijk Museum (these days situated near Central Station in Amsterdam) is the best in contemporary art. The Stedelijk costs nine euro. The Van Gogh is also worthwhile. Ten euro.
If the weather is good, the Vondelpark is a must visit and a trip on the canals is also very good. Canal trips are the favourite of most tourists 2 hours costs around 20 euro. There is also a possibility to rent a canal bike (www.canaltrips.nl), no prices there.
Neighbourhoods to walk: Jordaan and de Pijp. The Pijp also has a nice market (Albert Cuyp, not on sundays) and a park (Sarphatipark).
All in all you can do a lot here, but just walking around the canals can be fun. Most tourists also visit the Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein for cafes.
Enjoy your stay, I do every day.

Take a boat trip on the canals. Visit the Rijksmuseum, (Dutch masters, including Rembrandt). There are also various other museums, including the van Gogh museum. Den Haag is the administrative centre, but Amsterdam is the capital city. It has many beautiful buildings. Indonesian restaurants are fantastic. Definitely worth a visit, and the surrounding countryside might be a bit flat, but it's still very picturesque.

Take a boat ride round the canals. You can buy an all-in ticket which gives you entrance to the museums. Don't bother with the Rijksmuseum unless you like Mouldie Oldies and fat aristocratic kids. The Stedelijk is better :-D
Oh, there are also brewery tours, if you like that kind of thing. And Anne Frank's house, which everyone heads to.
You could also rent a bike and cycle round seeing stuff. I love Amsterdam, it's great :-)

Its worth visiting just for the atmosphere to sit in the cafes and watch the world go by eating really good apple pie and drinking very good coffee. The Van Gogh Museum is a must - completely mind blowing - extremely good shopping.
the red light area is actually in a very beautiful part of the city, and its well worth visiting just to say you've been.
Although atmosphere is not as nice at night time mainly due to large amounts of drunk tourists.

I'm going to Amsterdam at the end of the month with a group of workmates. It's just for two nights as I think that is long enough for a first trip with limited funds. I don't know about you but I'm going for the cheese!
Seriously though, there's loads to do (hopefully!!). Museums and galleries, walks, brewery trips, bike rides. Book a flight and get yourself there. You'll never know unless you go!!!

The art museums are amazing. There's Hals, and Vermeer, among others. There are really nice cafes where they serve really good coffee. The canals are interesting, providing a different kind of scenery than you get in most other cities. And the flower markets are beautiful.
I liked the Dutch people I met as well. And everyone rides a bicycle!

i imagine the means to smoke weed legally and socially has been a significant driving stress behind amsterdams vacationer figures. the actuality is tens of 1000's of young children flock to amersterdam in straightforward words to smoke weed and fulfill the sex commerce. Even travelers who visit and are not drawn to weed and sex earnings from the multi-and ecosystem it creates. once the bans are available in, i'll't many see young children going to Amsterdam in straightforward words on the muse of the prostitutes. basically as there's a huge drop in travelers if the sex commerce replaced into made unlawful. It replaced into with out doubt a mixture of both. Amsterdam will see a really major drop in tourism, the sex shops will see a huge drop in customers and many closures. the surely effective ingredient the weed ban may create is probably a larger type of travelers, albeit drastically fewer in determination.
