it makes you choke, only air is supposed to go in there, the lungs just get gummed up by other things. If you don't get the food out it blocks the airway and you die.

cough reflex works to send it back up..if it doesn't u will aspirate...meaning ur food will reach ur lungs...that may cause aspiration pneumonia...that can lead to death for unhealthy or elderly individuals. for some...if the food is too big....the airway gets blocked and cant even initiate cough reflex......so u choke

your cough reflex causing you to expel it. If this fails you will choke because you cannot move air to and from the lungs. Rarely you may aspirate (it falls into your lung)
