You can install programs on a second hard drive and most will work there. You usually can NOT just pick up the file and move it to the second hard drive. Most programs will have settings in the registry that will still poin to the old location so the programs will not work.
You normally have to uninstall the program and then reinstall it. During the install watch for a place where it ask you were to install the program (or if you want to do a custome install, select that and then it will ask for location). You will want to install it to d:xxxxxxxxxxx instead of the defaul c: location.
Whether Yahoo messenger has that option I can not answer.

First, if the hdd that Windows is installed on is full, that's a problem that disk cleaner programs aren't going to be able to help you much with. You should try to maintain at LEAST 20% free space on your hdd so that disk defragmenter can run without problems.
If you have space on another hard drive, you should move any files that you can to that other drive first. If you're still over the limit, uninstall programs (after backing up critical files first, duh) and then install them to your second hdd (restoring critical files afterward).
After you do that, open your C: drive in Windows Explorer and search for *.tmp and *.temp files and folders. You don't want to delete everything that comes up, but most things you can get rid of. And don't forget to clean out IE cookies and cache files. Once that's all done, open a DOS prompt and type "defrag C:" You can do that for your second drive as well.
That should clean you up and get you running again. You can't let the hdd fill up, so keep an eye on it. Get a larger hdd if you really need to. FREE SPACE IS YOUR FRIEND!! :-)
