I have a 1998 Nissan Sentra GXE. I would like to know when you are supposed to get a transmission flush? Also if I go to a mechanic and ask for a Tune-Up what should I be expecting so that I don't get ripped off? I am trying to keep my car in good running condition and want to make sure it lasts through the winter. Any of you "car" people out there have suggestions that I should do to help my car last are greatly appreciated!!!!

Also any suggestions as to which garages wouldn't rip you off are also welcome. I live in Howland, OH, that's 44484 zip code. Or if you have any idea as to how much each should cost that will help when I call around.

If it's an automatic, which I assume it is, then i think every 30K miles is good. It cost around $60. It is cheap insurance to change the fluid regular. Some may recommend longer intervals.
A manual transmission can go longer, say 60-90K miles. They don't have wearing parts like an automatic.
You should only need a tune up when the car starts to get bad gas mileage or it begins to idle roughly or have drive-ability issues. Cost can range widely depending on what they replace. I would get an estimate and list of things they do before you authorize any work. The dealership will be the most expensive. Ask around and you should be able to find a reputable independent mechanic.
With the new parts out there I would think you could go over 60K miles between tune-ups.
With the age of your car you need to make sure the timing belt has been replaced and the hoses have been replaced.
A broken timing belt could cost you big money?
A broken hose could cause you to get stranded or overheat the engine, again big money to fix.
Also, one more thing. I recommend replacing you battery every two or max three years, It's cheap and it will hopefully keep you from getting stranded.

If you haven't had it done already, you should have the transmission serviced. Make sure it is done with someone that has the machine that actually sucks all of the fluid out of the gears, rather than just draining the pan. It should cost you around $100 to have this done. Some other things..spark plugs about 60K miles, fuel filter 30K, air filter 15K or so, oil 5K. All of this is inexpensive and can be done yourself, or someone you know that is somewhat handy..... except for the transmission flush.

regular oil changes and a tune up after the recommended milage will kepp a car in good shape for a long time. when changing oil, get a lube job with it. a tune consists of new plugs, timing adjustment, if needed, and carburator adjustment if it has one. if you have fuel injection, you'll want the fuel system cleaned by a pro. adding a cleaning agent to the gas helps from the injectors getting fouled. most cars now days are too complex and to varied to allow the shade-tree mechanic much to do, but oil changes, and lubes are some of the things still done by the owner if he has a place and the few small tools nedded to do them.

Take it to any fast oil change place and tell them you want the transmission oil changed and nothing more pay them then go to a regular tune up shop they are listed in all phone books ( tell them you want spark plugs and wires plus a distributor cap and rotor) and nothing more, don't fall for anything that they might say such as you need this or that ect. and be firm too.
