I think E85 is a great thing. Yes, it is slightly less efficient than pure gasoline. I saw a gas station in Indiana that sold E85 and it was about 10% less expensive than regular gasoline so your per mile expense will not be dramatically higher. Actually compared to the 93 octane it was about 20% less expensive. The E85 or Flex Fuel has a much higher octane number, so your engine will never knock, probably extending the life of your engine. It burns much cleaner also. When you chose to fill up with E85 fuel, the money you spend on fuel will go to a farmer somewhere in the Midwest, he might buy himself a new truck or build a new runway on his ranch. When you buy gasoline, some of that money will go to Mideast, and you know what they can buy with this money. When Brazil started wide use of E85 fuel, within several years they completely eliminated their dependency on foreign oil. Actually, if enough people use E85 the cost of regular gasoline will probably go down significantly as there will be less of it needed.
So, in my opinion, when choosing a vehicle, if you're considering several similar ones, pick the one that offers a flex fuel option, since a car usually bought for 3-10 years, who knows what kind of fuels will be widely used in time. I am at this time delaying the purchase of the new car until my favorite manufacturer starts offering the Flex Fuel capable cars. Sorry for running on, but you can tell, I am rather passionate about the subject.

Its nice to be able to get cheap 100+ octane gas. I don't like the idea of using up to 20% more e85 than gasoline to go the same distance.

alcahol in pure form need to be as much as twice as rich as gas but can give as much as 20% more power e85 gives up alot to gas but mixing gas and achahol lowers the amount of sour mash needed to give a good fuel and lowers the need for more oil consumpsion it takes some were in the range of 100 000 gallons of sour mash to to make 100 gallons of achahol so you can see it is not very economical

PRO: It is less expensive to produce. CON: It is less powerful than gas. PRO: It is more environmentally friendly. CON: It is less efficient than gas. PRO: It is clean burning. CON: There are less fueling stations for it... Well E85 like all fuel types has its up side and down side.

big mike's right. wouldn't you rather have your money go to an american farmer to feed his family instead of terrorists and greedy ExxonMobil? E85 may not have the filling stations yet, but they are coming.

i can FART a better OCTANE RATING than that stuff. it's a flash in the pan (no pun) for us consumers. and it was just window dressing to try and boost really crappy american automakers' profits.
