Because the Americans have a very limited view of us, and don't know much about our different accents and cultures. They think everyone speaks the Queen's English, or is otherwise cockney!

Like Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta. I dont know anyone in London that speaks like that.
A funnier example is the Nightmares and Dreamscapes series that was on in USA, theres an episode called Crouch End. I swear there are extras with bowler hats on!! Another thing I have never seen in London.
I presume they prefer the Posh accent and its what they teach at acting school. Even though no-one has spoken ike that for 50 years.

Probably the same reason that United States Southerners are always portrayed in film with a drawl and bad grammar. It's called a stereotype, and the world is full of them.

High English accents are easier to understand. Middle ones are indistinct. Low ones are impenetrable. High ones sound nice. Middle ones could be confused for another nation of origin.
And it's the same reason most US actors have a standardized American accent: 1) people from all walks are capable of understanding, and 2) it's a sign of the ability of the actor to verbally adapt.

How come, in a modern film set in, say, 1940, all the vehicles are from 1940. There aren't any old bangers from 1920 knocking about.

Isn't that the idea, to sound British? It is better than the dreadful London Cockney accents Americans try to do (Like the sweep in Mary Poppins played by Dick van Dyke).

Its the same reason that actors playing Southern American's make them all sound like inbred hicks. It's because they aren't familiar with the culture, they're familiar with the stereotypes.

because its either what the americans think we sound like or it is an english person who actually talks like that and went to hollywood cos they knew they could get a job cos thats what americans want to hear when they hear an english person speak.
