No. The only cost is dealing with the people in it who can be rather "special" at times.

It is free to play online if a server is available. EA is making money on the upgrades and new versions. And not wasting money running servers.
Guild Wars is also free to play online.

No you dint you just have to own the game to play on line and get a account so you can and it get harder though
