I know that purists who hark back to the golden age of Warner Brothers and MGM won't agree but The Simpsons has to be the most perfect comedy ever as it has something for everyone. The characters are believable and we can liken them to people we know. For babies, it's a cartoon, for under ten's it's got the farts and the poo, for the teens, it's got the follies of youth. Most adult males can recognise at least a bit of stupidity and laziness in themselves in Homer and then, right at the top of the scale, you get the jokes which are so subtle and dirty that the on-the-ball, hyper-intelligent crack-up laughing. It's also got the between-the-lines stuff (although you don't really have to read between-the-lines much when it comes to Smithers!). It makes fun of people like the British and the Australians but their portrayals of other nationals are certainly of a better-researched stereotype (compare with Tom & Jerry doing Robin Hood - I never knew that people from Nottinghamshire spoke Cockney!?!). They even bite the hand that feeds them by taking the p*ss out of the Fox network and Rupert Murdoch. It's subversive and still fresh after all those episodes and I reckon that if they released their Halloween specials as a film 20-30 years ago, it would have got a definite 18 rating.

That's tough. Overall, I love the Fleisher "Superman" cartoons from the late 1930s - early 1940s. But it's tough not to vote for Looney Toons.

From this era - The Simpsons (I'v ejust watched the one where Homer works at the Quicky Mart as well s Nuclear Power Station to buy Lisa an pony and nearly choked on my Banger n Mash from laughing!) and in previous era, when the European Line-Art drawing-style of Simpsons was not proliferated, Ulysses 31 stands Head and Shoulders above all the rest - its washproof!!
