Personally I think it's really bad. I was really hoping the baby was going to be another girl, and when they announced that it was a boy, I was very disappointed. Even more depressing is that people are rejoicing all over the nation at the news that virtually proclaims "women are no good."
I really wanted to see Princess Aiko become Empress... I could usually care less about the imperial family, but Aiko was different. I was really excited about the prospect of actually seeing a reining empress in my lifetime, but that hope is now utterly gone. Now that they have a male heir, no lawmaker would want to rock the boat and change the imperial household law - they don't want to go down in history as lawmakers who destroyed the imperial bloodline.
As a young Japanese woman, I have a lot of sympathy toward Princess Masako, a former diplomat who gave up her career to marry the crown prince. I used to think that, if someone was going to change the imperial family, it's going to be Masako and her daughter. But now Masako's suffering from depression and little Aiko is not going to be an empress... I took the news of the birth of baby boy very, very personally.
Oh well. I saw the turn of the century and even the turn of the millennium... seeing Aiko succeeding the throne may be asking too much.

As a princess who will likely never rise to the rank of Empress, I can sympathize with Aiko. But a figurehead is just that - the real concern should really lie with who succeeds prime minister Koizumi.
Still, legislation to Japanese law was about to be introduced to allow for a female empress. I think the idea that things event came to this point shows just how much Japan has changed in the post WW2 era.

The Japanes throne is a figurehead and has more to do with tradition and the cultural past than about power. For the Japanese, that history is very important.
Probably good.

I don't know.. A female empress will dramatically change Japan. Not just because of the presence that Japan is ruled by a female, but also because of her future actions to deal with her country and others.
Females and males think alike!
I'd highly doubt a colored person or even Hilary clinton will be elected for president in 2 years.. :(

I think it will be nice if Japan have their first empress. I mean if you see England, they have Queen Elizabeth. And there's nothing bad about it, isn't it ? So...is too bad they miss the chance to have their first Empress.

I have to agree with L3. That line is just a figurehead. No real power, so who cares? Though I could be wrong and they could carry some kind of underground sway among the clans there that we don't understand.

Personally I think it's bad, I mean why can't someone who was born into the royal family as a first born or otherwise be an heir no matter the gender? I mean, other countries do it.

As an Empress myself I would like them to be more open minded but it is their throne and blood line.

Great - last thing this world needs is a Japanese woman in power. Trust me - they are controlling pyschotic freaks. Been married to one long enough to know!!! Run don't hide - they aren't like anything they are portrayed to be in the movies. Damn you Hollywood! Damn you!!!!

I think they should keep tradition. Lord knows enough of it is dying all over the world.
