Depends on the telemarketer. The vast majority, unfortunately, are scripted human-bots. The script is designed to not let you exit, politely or otherwise. The assumptions being made about me by the scripters (and the company behind them) are frankly offensive. There is no obligation to be polite to corporate bots, but no need to be especially offensive either. A quick "no" and hangup works pretty well.
On the other hand, sometimes a principal of a smaller business will go to our web site and understand what we do, and how his/her products/services might help us do better at what we do. When someone like that calls, I listen - and sometimes, I learn something, or end up buying something.

I was in telemarketing a few years ago.
Then I switched to the Web as a great way to do business... without harrassing my clients at home during supper time !
Today's effective enterprises are using telemarketers for inbound calls only.
I wouldn't trust a company using outbound telemarketers. It means they never upgrade their way of thinking.
And that means they are bad enterprises.
adWords (and Yahoo and MSN services) is THE thing now to make sales.

I know it is a job for them, but calling at 9 or 10 pm at night really ticks me off to no extent. I am always kind and curteous to them but when I say no the first time, they shouldn't be continuing to talk. No is no I'm not interested and hang up but they don't. That is when sometimes I get angry and tell them I said no what don't you understand about the word no the n or the o.

I wouldn't mind so much if they gave their home number and address so I could find them.
