if you compare West and East,
The West had problems that limited it's population growth..such as the black plague and dark ages where half the people died.
I don't ever recall reading that the Chinese have similar plague in it's history (maybe a smaller version)
plus the Chinese developed early advanced tools for Farming which probably also lead to population growth

They bred unbridled and kept having babies until they got boys in the family since girls were considered of lesser value then boys.
