North Americans hug very little compared to other cultures. Latin Americans, Spaniards, French, Italians, Greeks, are just a few cultures I know of that hug friends, acquaintances, and family when greeting and saying goodbye, as well as to congratulate and show affection.

Americans as a rule, I have observed, just say hello and hug very little. Example: My older relatives were raised in Latin America and hug much more than I do. It does not feel as natural for me because I was raised in the USA. However, my husband, born and raised in the USA by parents, grandparents, etc. who were born and raised in the USA thinks I hug a lot.

They do because there's more warmth in a hug than just a 'hi' or a 'hello'.
